Sweet Easy Baklava African Dessert Recipe

Yields 12 to 14 servings

Ingredients
One 16 ounce package phyllo dough
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups chopped walnuts
1 cup melted butter


Baklava Syrup
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
½ cup orange blossom honey
¼ teaspoon orange blossom water


Directions
Preheat oven to 350° F. Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish. Mix cinnamon and walnuts in a medium bowl set aside. Unroll phyllo cut into two equal halves. 

Cover phyllo with a slightly moist cloth while assembling to keep from drying out. Place 2 sheets of phyllo in the bottom of the prepared dish, brush liberally with butter and sprinkle 3 tablespoons of cinnamon and walnut mixture on top. 

Repeat layers. 

Cut baklava into desired serving sizes bake 45-50 minutes. Meanwhile, combine remaining ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, bring to a boil and reduce heat to low. 

Finally, when the baklava is removed from the oven immediately evenly pour syrup over the finished pastry. Allow cooling before serving. Store uncovered.

Easy Frikkadel Meatballs
Ingredients 1 pound ground beef or ground ostrich meat 1 medium onion finely chopped 1 cup of dried bread crumbs 1/4 cup whole milk 3 tablespoons of your favorite chutney 1 large egg
1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon curry powder 1 teaspoon Worcester sauce Salt and pepper to taste

Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Soak breadcrumbs in milk then mix all ingredients well with clean hands, roll the meat into medium size balls. Bake for 45 minutes. Serve warm with chutney or mustard on top of each meatball.

South African carrot sambal pairs well with everything from sandwiches, soups, salads, wraps, fish and grilled meats.
Commonly used as a condiment and an ingredient in soups and stews in South Africa, sambal is a chunky hot chili sauce made with hot peppers, spices and fresh herbs used on just about everything. This version of sambal is made with sweet shredded carrots.

Ingredients 4 cups finely grated carrots 1 medium finely sliced onion 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon minced ginger 1 teaspoon brown sugar 3 chopped hot chilies

Directions Toss carrots and onions with lemon juice and 1 teaspoon salt, let sit 1/2 hour, then squeeze with hands and discard any excess liquid. Combine with remaining ingredients and mix well. Allow to sit refrigerated for several hours before serving. Serve with any meat or seafood dish. Sambal is used similar to salsa.
